In this blog I am going to talk about sexism. Australia as an enlightened and developed country, sexism still exist (Ellerman&Smith, 2011). This social perception can be traced back to the history of Australia, Australia social structure is considered as a patriarchy society in the history, Man can call the decision, be able to attend college and get educated, however, woman certainly had no voice. In our modern days, although every child now can receive good education, gender inequality is still exist in the workplace. According to a study of the ASX shows that only 8% of 200 companies have truly established policies of gender diversity from top to bottom (Andrew, 2013).
Female are usually thought as a role to manage the household domestic matters, they are emotional, unstable and without a rational logical mind in urgent situation(Connell,2007). Julia Gillard as the first female prime minister in Australia, she revealed that she hates sexist attacks in office. She does not feel sad or hurt but, ”more like murderous rage really”. ABC NEWS on 30th of September released an interview between Ms Gillard and famous feminist author Anne Summers. It is the first public appearance by the formal Prime Minister since she left the position in June. During the interview, it is the first time for Ms Gillard to put forward her story to the general public about her political life and all that stress and pressure. She said when she was getting ready to do her final prime minister speech, she told herself everything is okay, she would not give those people satisfaction of seeing her shed a tear.
From above we can find that MS Gillard is a very strong and tough woman. She was bombarded with all sorts of sexist media attacks, whether it is on Facebook, Twitter or other media forms, it is easily found that Ms Gillard was attacked by inappropriate cartoons, signs and so on. If she is a male PM, would she be attacked by her gender? The answer absolutely is NO. People would only focus on the achievements in masculine’s official career. If males have disadvantage of their career, the problem of gender would not be one of the reasons. Even in the contemporary world, government and large companies are dominated with male executives, the boys-club is hard to allow female to get in and listen to the instruction made by females.
It is a result in lack of gender equality in education system, most of schools choose to ignore this kind of issues, they try to treat girls and boys in the similar way. Due to the historical gender unequal reason, people are still living in a sexist society. School education should teach boys how to respect female, such as their mother, sister in their family and girls in their life. In the same time, girls are also need to be taught in a way that they can grow into a strong and confident women, when they face unequal treatments, they will not only have the knowledge but also the courage to face the tough side of the society.
